Antique Military Chest - General Sir Henry Thuillier

A large antique military chest that belonged to Maj General Sir Henry Thuillier. Fabricated from the finest Burmese teak this chest was made in the UK for use in India.

Henry Fleetwood Thuillier was born at Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, on 30 March 1868 to Emmeline Williams, daughter of Fleetwood Williams and Colonel Sir Henry Ravenshaw Thuillier, KCIE (1838–1922) a British Army officer and the Surveyor General of India from 1887 to 1895. He was also the grandson of Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Edward Landor Thuillier CSI FRS, also Surveyor General of India and Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery.
Henry Thuillier was commissioned into the Royal Engineers on 23 July 1890. Much of his early career was spent in India where his family lived. He became commander of 2nd Infantry Brigade in October 1915, General Officer Commanding 15th Division in June 1917 and General Officer Commanding 23rd Division in Italy in 1918, during the First World War.
After the war Henry Fleetwood Thuillier became Commandant of the School of Military Engineering in November 1919, Director of Fortifications and Works at the War Office in 1924, and General Officer Commanding 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division in June 1927. He retired from the army in March 1930. He died on 11 June 1953. His son, Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Shakespear Thuillier DSO (10 September 1895 – 1982) was also a British Army officer.

An old label on the chest's side notes the owner's name and rank. We acquired the chest from Henry F Thuillier's granddaughter.

The top lifts to reveal the interior with 4 small and 2 larger compartments.

The corners and edges have been reinforced with heavy-duty brass protectors.

The golden-coloured teak hardwood chest is handmade. Its colour has evolved through decades of polishing.

Why not consider this authentic chest along your hallway, or as a stylish original feature in your living room or bedroom as a bedside table.

Consider an optional authentic large padlock to complete the look.

Like its owner this old chest has had a long and distinguished life! It'll show signs of use, and historic repairs, scratches, dents and variation in colour. The photos will give you a good idea of its overall condition. There are two missing brass corner pieces on the top left and right. We have added a replacement hasp and staple.
