This spectacular antique Shekhawati chest we estimate to be between 100-150 years old. Carl bought it on his latest trip to India. It is the most ornate and decorated chest we have ever acquired. The wooden frame is dark roheda wood a rare hardwood found in highly decorated brass. The quality of this chest cannot be underestimated. We have bought over 5,000 chests, trunks and boxes and this is the finest we have ever stocked.

You'll see in the photo, this stunning lockable box has 4 'secret' compartments. The box would have been used as a dowry chest given by the groom to his wife and would have contained jewellery. The owner would have been a very wealthy Marwari merchant from Shekhawati a region of NE Rajasthan a few hundred kilometres from New Delhi. Read more about Carl's trips to Shekhawati.

Shekhawati region is famed for intricately carved architecture including doors, windows and furniture. Historically, Indian merchants and families would have used this style of an authentic old wooden chest for keeping valuables and family heirlooms.
